17Oct9 Rules To Designing A Great Logo

It’s very well commented at Vecindad Gráfica: “Every rules was made to be broken”. But it’s important to know what they are, so we can break them knowing what we’re doing.

  1. DONNOT show the customer propositions that will harm you.
How many times do we say “the customer chose the worst proposition I gave him”, then don’t even show him the designs you dislike.
  2. Show the customer your logo in black and white.
The most important thing of all is the message the logo carries, so showing up a logo with a rainbow of colors will only make your customer doubt more. It’s preferable to show the customer a monochrome logo. Later on, when the customer makes up his/her mind about the form and shape, then you can go to colors.
  3. Showing the logo in certain software like Illustrator, Corel Draw or FreeHand.
The best thing about vectorial designing is to have the possibility of showing the logo without losing a good resolution, you can export it in Flash and other software that give you this option.
  4. Have the interview only with the customer that will take the final decision.
There’s nothing worst than a room full of “know-it-alls” that will make you change your logo at the end.
  5. You need to make sure that logo has to work in all it’s sizes..
The logo has to perfect in a Jumbo size package as well as on a pen.
  6. Avoid filters, effects and other cosmetic visuals.
If you want to be “trendy” now, for next year it will look “cheap” and “outdated”.
  7. Make the visual effect condensed.
Don’t fill in your logo with complex visual messages, do not use a million fonts to say one word. A complex logo deludes the idea of the brand and looks terrible in small sizes.
  8. Always keep in mind all the logo dispositions you might have.
Think in different ways of representing logos, let it be horizontal or vertical or without a few elements, like in the case of Apple, NO words, only the apple.
  9. Try your logo with different media.
It’s not only going to be printed on white pages, it might be on TV sometimes, or in big billboards on the streets, along with other pubs in a magazine, in commercial banners, etc.

16OctGraphic Design Plays A Secondary Roll

This article is a little old, and it was extracted from the journal el Pais. Proving what we all know, in graphic designing, less is more.

The best web pages in Internet are simply functional. They all have a concrete objective. Graphic designing has an important, yet limited roll. Don’t try to make out something that Internet is not.

Have you noticed how most of the Flash intros are gone? A couple years ago, they were everywhere. I have asked many people, from around 35 different countries, what do you do when you see a flash presentation? — I skip it– was the unanimous answer.
A Flash presentation is a bad TV announcement made by people that couldn’t design real announcements. They were all invented by graphic designers desperate for making Internet in Television, they wanted glory and fame.

In the Communication Arts Magazine awards gala. One of the winners of 2005 had beautiful designs. There was just a little problem, this designer has been categorized for his products as follows: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8… Too intuitive. He certainly deserves the award for best graphic design in E-business.

Of course, Nike has won an award. He always gets high scores from the people that understand his designs and things like that. Nike has a web page that up to this day always has something that fails to work. I wanted to try, once again.

Nike.com still has this attempt of radical and dynamical web navigation. I click on Europe, then in English, then in Football. When I finally get into the football page, there’s an amazing picture of Thierry Henry. And right beside Thierry there’s yet another classification: Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia/Pacific. This is sadly, no joke.

No one will ever allow this man to design circulation signals for the streets. Nonetheless, when graphic designers design a dynamic-navigational web site they win awards. Why do we still have a bunch of people that cannot understand the correct functioning of Internet after so many years?

The old “Intenet is something new and cutting edge” excuse is no longer available in stock, sorry! Why can’t Google or Skype win this type of awards? Why “art” and “innovation” are limited to cliches that demand high-impacting visuals in a page?

Out there, there are hundreds of young and inexpertly graphic designers that are receiving a very mislead message. Internet by nature is a functional space, with specific objectives. If you want a “avant-garde” design, go to Google, Skype, Ebay, Amazon. These pages earn money by satisfying real needs.

You web page has to be functional. It has to be quick and convincing, with an user-friendly navigation and dummy-proof. Internet is not a TV commercial, it’s simply Internet.

14Oct5 Tips To Stimulate Your Creativity

If you find yourself in one of those moments when publicity doesn’t flow properly, stress is killing you and your deadline approaches.

If you’ve been here before, KEEP on reading:

  1. Read a lot. The best way of increasing our idea flow is to constantly read. And I’m not talking about only design-related material, but any magazine, book or article in general. Science fiction is the bomb. The illiterate graphic designer will always be more troubled by “creativity winters”. Some times the least expect book can give you great ideas for the future.
  2. Unplugg yourself. How many times have you found yourself trying for hours and hours to solve a problem, up to the point of exhaustion, and you get nowhere? This happens because when we’re troubled we cannot think straight and we find ourselves in front of an empty desktop. Go take a walk or simply breath some fresh air. Close the copybook for a while. Turn off the computer and leave the room for a while.
  3. Think upside-down. Most of the time you want to know what’s going to be the best solution for a problem or you do anything to figure it out. Stop for a second and think, what if do it upside-down? Great findings and discoveries happened by accident. Let’s say for example, you need to create a package for the next Barbie doll, you think immediately pink, cute, fashion… but what if you think black? transparent? metallic?
  4. Keep ALL your ideas. You never know when that silly song you were singing way home is going to come handy. Never throw away any thought that crosses your head. Any idea, as silly as it can be, treasure it. If you can, always keep a little copybook and a pencil so you’re ready when ideas strike.
  5. Don’t fear mistakes. Many times the fear to failure or perfectionism limit us and make us think we must be perfect. Let me tell you something, you’ll be making mistakes, sooner or later, so relax. It’s ok to make mistakes from time to time. Great mistakes have lead to great discoveries, so leave room for mistakes.
